Horatio Alger’s Record: Edmonton, Then a 1984 Commerce Degree

The Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans announced on December 5, 2017, that Gregory E. Abel would receive its 2018 award. That release is an organizational primary. It states he was born in 1962 in Edmonton, Alberta, and earned a commerce degree from the University of Alberta in 1984 with distinction.

The same notice describes early work at PricewaterhouseCoopers and then CalEnergy, later MidAmerican Energy Holdings and Berkshire Hathaway Energy. The Association’s member page repeats the career sequence: senior executive roles from 1992, president after the 1999 MidAmerican name, CEO in 2008, chairman added in 2011, MidAmerican renamed Berkshire Hathaway Energy in 2014, and vice chairman of Berkshire Hathaway Inc. in January 2018 while remaining executive chairman of the energy company.

Those sentences are what the Association published about its honoree. They are not a finding about later Berkshire capital allocation.
