Berkshire Hathaway’s Form 8-K (earliest event May 3, 2025) states: on May 3, Warren Buffett, then chairman and CEO, announced he would recommend to the board at its May 4 meeting that Greg Abel, Vice Chairman – Non-Insurance Operations, be appointed chief executive officer effective January 1, 2026. On May 4, the board voted unanimously to appoint Abel President and CEO on that date. Buffett would remain chairman. A May 5 press release is attached as Exhibit 99.1. The 2026 proxy repeats the same May 3–4 sequence in a compensation-table footnote.
The Daily Caller (May 3, 2025) and the Washington Examiner both reported Buffett’s remarks at the Omaha shareholder meeting, including the sentence that the time had arrived for Greg to become chief executive at year-end. Those articles are news commentary. They recap a public meeting. They are not the SEC instrument. This site does not invent additional Buffett quotes beyond what those outlets and the 8-K support.
The Epoch Times later recapped the board’s succession votes in its chair/CEO-split story. “Heir apparent” talk is opinion. The unanimous May 4 appointment is documented.
